If events in your life begin to cause distress and interfere with your typical activities and responsibilities, then it is likely time to seek individual therapy with a psychologist. People may seek counseling for help with issues that are hard to face alone.
With individuals, we help clients move out of their “rut” and find ways to enjoy life again. As psychologists, we are trained to provide individual therapy for:
- Anxiety (Generalized Anxiety, Social Anxiety, Panic Attacks, etc.)
- Relationship problems
- Depression
- Stress management
- Trauma/PTSD
- Grief and Loss
- Bipolar Disorder
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Personality Disorders
- Adult and Child Therapy
- And many other stressors
If you experience any of the problems above, a trained therapist or psychologist can help.
If you experience any of the problems above then a trained therapist can help
Our role as psychologists is to create a safe and supportive place where you can explore unfamiliar and uncomfortable experiences without feeling shame. We have been trained to help people find their way through life’s difficulties and create new personal opportunities. We all face stress at some point in our lives, and it can be caused by things like relationship problems, physical illness, work stress, substance abuse, and family conflicts.
In therapy, time is spent getting to know you and discussing current struggles, symptoms, and other points of concern, and then developing goals to address those areas. We will match the needs and issues you bring with the most scientifically validated therapy approaches.
The therapies our psychologists utilize are Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Prolonged Exposure (PE), and Christian Counseling.
Our primary therapy system is Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). CBT is a short-term, highly focused therapy that has been shown through research to be the gold standard treatment for many different problems including anxiety, depression, sleep difficulties, relationship problems, dissatisfaction with life, and a host of other life stressors. If you would like to learn more about our approach using CBT, then check out our Cognitive Behavior Therapy page.
What to expect when you call
When you reach out to our office, we will respond to your inquiry to set up an appointment or brief phone consultation. New or existing clients can usually see a therapist within a week or two. Intake forms are available through a secure portal online; plan to take 15 minutes to complete and upload them before your initial appointment.
What to expect at the first appointment with a therapist
Most appointments with our psychologists are 50 minutes long, and the goal of the first one or two sessions is assessment. You’ll be asked to share why you are seeking individual therapy as well as any goals you may have. We’ll discuss your concerns and ask detailed questions from a biological, sociological, and psychological perspective. We may explore issues related to family, relationships, trauma, work, school, or other relevant areas. We want to begin to establish a warm, safe, and trusted environment so you are comfortable sharing what’s happening in your life.
We will then put together a unique treatment plan for you to help you reach specific goals including frequency of visits and things to work on in between sessions. Most of our clients schedule weekly sessions, but the frequency of appointments and length of therapy will depend on the severity of the diagnosis, the intensity of symptoms, and the nature of the overall situation.
Since we are a private pay practice, we don’t accept insurance. However, many of our clients pay us directly and get reimbursed by their insurance company as an out-of-network provider.
What to expect in an ongoing counseling relationship
As we get to know you and better understand your situation, we will continue to tailor our scientific-based services, sessions, and referrals to meet your unique needs on your path to healing.
For example, many of our clients are Christian and want to incorporate their faith beliefs into their therapy. We provide Christian integrated therapy for those clients who choose to pursue this avenue. For those who don’t, we stick to evidence-based psychological principles and processes.
In some cases, you may choose to meet with your counselor online for some or all of your sessions. This may be warranted if transportation, schedule, or distance makes it challenging to consistently keep appointments or if online therapy can minimize anxiety and fear. Our office is located in Middletown, near Shelbyville Road and Evergreen Road.
Although we do not immediately recommend psychotropic medications, some clients may need some extra help initially or to help facilitate progress in individual talk therapy. In this case, we can refer highly distressed clients to a psychiatrist or other medical professional to work in tandem. Our goal is to eventually give you the tools to be able to function on your own and have a better quality of life.
